rose3Rose “Osang” Fostanes is a 47-year-old Filipino caregiver working in Tel Aviv, Israel. Osang, as she is called by friends, has been working as an oversees foreign worker since she was 23, nearly 20 years. She has worked in Egypt and Lebanon before being employed in Tel Aviv for the last six years. She currently cares and cleans for a woman in her 50s. She lives in a crowded apartment in south Tel Aviv with seven other foreign workers. The money she saves by sharing the small flat is sent to her family in the Philippines. Osang has dreamed of singing since she was a child, but was never taken seriously in the Philippines because of her weight.

“I’m a person who likes to take care of everybody. I don’t care about myself. What’s important for me is my family. All my life I want to support them even the last penny that I have. I have to give it to my family,” she said on X Factor Israel. “Of course, I love my life to be change. It was very hard. For 20 years of working as a metapelet not only on this country (but also) from another country. I think, it’s enough for me. For 20 years of working, it’s very long time…I want to take out my family from sad story also because they are very poor in the Philippines.”

Osang enjoys the support of Israeli’s who favor her to win a recording contract, as well as the 40,000 Filipino contract workers living in Israel. Even the Philippines ambassador to Israel has attended the show to support her performance. Perhaps the Philippines has learned to look beyond Osang’s physical appearance to see the strength and beauty within.
